MSC Aries: Iran released Indian citizens but vessel still seized

After a long struggle and negotiations, India has once again won a big victory. After Qatar, India has now ensured the safe return of the remaining 16 Indian citizens from Iran.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps seized the Portuguese-flagged commercial vessel MSC Aries, a cargo ship belonging to Israel, in the strategic Strait of Hormuz on April 13.

Iran had said that the ship MSC Aries was seized for violating international maritime laws. now iran frees crew but vessel still seized.

There were 25 crew in the captured ship which included Indian, Philippine, Pakistani, Russian, and Estonian citizens. All the governments were talking at their own level but most of the citizens were Indians.

The Indian Foreign Ministry was in constant contact with Iran. Information regarding the Indians and their release was being obtained through several phone conversations with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Iran has now decided to free 16 Indians aboard the cargo ship. Ann Tessa Joseph one of the 17 Indian nationals, was released by Iran a few days later on April 18.

The Ministry of External Affairs of India advised its citizens that if anyone travels to Israel or Iran, then they must take precautions and inform the Indian Embassy about it.
